    \u201cDo you think it might have been presumptuous on my part, wanting to challenge\u00a0myself with a tribute to Stan Getz?\u201d\u00a0This was the dubious question that Paolo Recchia posed when he asked me to\u00a0give him my opinion of his new CD.\u00a0And so, as it should be, I listened carefully to his music, and with much\u00a0interest, I must add.<\/em><\/p>\n

    It\u2019s always risky for a musician to base and compare his work to that of past\u00a0legends.\u00a0You need technical and musical background and study. You must also give up\u00a0your personal interpretation: every piece you\u2019ve listened to that musician\u00a0play, you must have profoundly absorbed and assimilated \u2013 having, however, been\u00a0able to have extracted from it something personal for you \u2013 in a way that your\u00a0tribute is not merely a slavish copy of what you can\u2019t really copy.\u00a0It\u2019s not an easy task. <\/em><\/p>\n

    That is exactly why you need humility and definitely\u00a0neither conceit nor presumption to be able to make a tribute\u2026so, there you\u00a0are. This CD is precisely a recording which portrays humility.\u00a0Paolo normally has an experimental inclination, a modern way of playing. Yet,\u00a0despite this, with Enrico Bracco and Nicola Borelli, they too astounding on the\u00a0recording, has had the courage to take a leap to 50 years ago, arriving at an\u00a0incredible presentation of themes, rich harmonic mastery, warm sound and\u00a0relaxed swing \u2013 which, in my opinion, are the fundamental components to\u00a0remember the \u201cCalifornia\u201d period and the extraordinary musicians who made real\u00a0jazz.<\/em><\/p>\n

    Playing the music of others is always experimental, fundamentally: you have to\u00a0compare yourself to something profoundly different than what you know well –\u00a0yourself. The result? While I was listening, it seemed like I was hearing Lee\u00a0Konitz, Bud Shank and other musicians with whom I\u2019ve been lucky enough to have\u00a0performed.\u00a0At the same time though, I heard Paolo\u2019s personality emerge, exactly in the\u00a0sensitivity and phrasing of a young player, used to other types of language\u00a0and imagery. That\u2019s not easy to find. Precisely for this reason, his tribute\u00a0to Stan Getz is a masterpiece.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

    Paolo Recchia is amazing because he is well prepared: but it\u2019s not only for\u00a0his technique, it\u2019s a matter of his sensitivity. He has listened to numerous\u00a0sax players and through them he has told his own story\u2026and for me, this,\u00a0really this, is music. I can do nothing else but compliment Paolo and his\u00a0collaborating musicians.\u00a0Congratulations!<\/em><\/p>\n
